Scotland v New Zealand

New Zealand were first up and scored through Robert Clay, while Niall Sturrock confidently replied for Scotland to make it 1-1 after the first round. Both Geoffrey Chalken (NZL) and Ian Wilson (SCO) failed to score in the second round but William Dickie put New Zealand one up in the next round, only for John Candlin to level the scores again: 2-2 after three rounds. New Zealand's Ross Tritt took the ball round Alistair Ross but took it too far, and ran it out off the back line, allowing Hew Bishop to take the score to 3-2 for Scotland after the fourth round. Grant Orpwood of New Zealand now had to score to keep his side in the contest and, for a moment it looked as if he had. Alistair Ross in the Scottish goal looked to have drawn his opponent out too far on the right but the New Zealander slipped the ball under the Scottish keeper into the net just after the umpire had blown to signal the end of the eight seconds allowed. Scotland were through 3-2 without Ben Gibson having to take his turn.

Scotland v Wales
With New Zealand still to take on Wales in the final penalty shoot out, Scotland knew they would be sure of qualifying for the 5-8 play offs with a win against Wales, and that losing would leave them relying on a count back situation whatever happened in the last play off. Niall Sturrock opened for and looked supremely confident in beating the Welsh keeper. The first Welsh player tried to play it quickly past Alistair Ross and the Scottish keeper brilliantly parried his shot with his left pad, leaving the Welshman on his back side: 1-0 Scotland. Ian Wilson made it two for Scotland after sneaking the ball between the keeper's legs and Alistair Ross once again kept out the second Welsh attempt, to put Scotland in a commanding 2-0 lead after the second round. John Candlin could not find his way round the Welsh keeper in the third round and Wales clawed one back through a penalty stroke after Gary Cope took the ball past the Scottish keeper's right hand side only to be unceremoniously dumped to the ground with the goal at his mercy - a clear penalty stroke, well converted. which ended that round with the score 2-1 to Scotland. Hew Bishop added to the tension by sending his shot wide of the right hand post to leave the score at 2-1 for Scotland but the fourth Welsh penalty taker made a hash of his attempt to lob Alistair Ross, who was able to clear the ball decisively. Ben Gibson stepped up and it looked as if he had lost the chance to score when he stumbled right in front of the Welsh keeper but he recovered to take the ball past the keeper's right hand side and sweep it into the empty net to give Scotland an unassailable 3-1 lead. Despite a valiant effort by Scottish keeper Alistair Ross, the fifth Welsh player shot from a narrow angle and fired in right on the eight second mark to end the shoot out with Scotland 3-2 ahead. Scotland and New Zealand went on to contest places 5-8 while Wales were relegated to the 9-13 play offs.
