2019 Senior Grand Masters Celtic Cup

Swansea, Wales 26-28 April 2019

The Celtic Cup on 26-28 April took place at the King George V Playing Fields, Swansea, Wales. For the first time, four teams competed for the Grand Masters (Over 60) trophy in a round robin competion over three days: France, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The French squad was supplemented by Welsh players as they could not raise a full team. All matches were played in four quarters of seventeen and a half minutes with a ten minute break at half time and an interval of two minutes between quarters.

Scotland were defending the cup which they had won the previous year in France. A defeat in their first match against Wales was a hammer blow from which they could not recover but, after a frustrating 1-1 draw against the France/Wales side, they showed their mettle in the final match, winning 4-1 with goals from Alan Bain, Alan Bryce (penalty corner), Sandy Weir and Ian Pett.Wales were clear winners, emerging undefeated from the weekend, and Scotland's win over Ireland gave them second place.

Table

Technically, the competition was between Ireland, Scotland and Wales as France could not raise a full team and brought in a number of Welsh players to make up their side. The table assumes that France was part of the tournament but the order would have been the same if results of the matches involving them had not been counted.
