2017 Celtic Cup
Cork Church of Ireland Hockey Club, Ireland 28-30 April 2017
The 2017 Celtic Cup, for the first time incorporating a Senior Grand Masters (Over 70) competition, took place in Cork, Ireland from Friday 28 April to Sunday 30 April.
Scotland fielded teams at Grand Masters, Great Grand Masters and Senior Grand Masters level. The first two competitions involved France, Ireland, Scotland and Wales and the Senior Grand Masters only Scotland and Wales.
The tournament was played at Garryduff Sports Centre, Rochestown, County Cork, Ireland, where there is a water based pitch with all seater covered stand and a sand based pitch.
The hosts, Ireland, won the premier trophy, the Grand Masters Celtic Cup, with three wins out of three, narrowly pipping the holders Scotland 1-0 in a tense final match of the tournament. Wales surprised Ireland in the Great Grand Masters tournament with another 1-0 win on the final day to take the trophy. There was no cup as such for the Senior Grand Masters, who won the medals courtesy of a 1-0 victory in the tournament itself, also beating Wales 2-1 in a friendly international on the last day.
Tournament Schedule
Scotland Grand Masters and Great Grand Masters played one match each day, while the Senior Grand Masters side played Wales twice, on the Saturday for the Celtic Cup and on the Sunday as a friendly international.
